My Favorite App is.....

...CamScanner. I've talked about this app before, but because it is so helpful and versatile, I wanted to update my post. CamScanner is available in a free version for Mac, Android, and Windows. If you prefer an ad-free version, CamScanner Pro will also allow more cloud storage. At $4.99, it is worth this small fee. Here are the links for the pro versions: Mac, Android. (currently only $1.99!) I was unable to locate a pro version for Windows phones. iPad users can also download the free or pro app.

So, allow me to explain why this is such an awesome app. Do you need to share several pages with someone and they need them right away? You're not near a scanner or copier. (Some copiers can scan to email) What's a person to do?  Here are some of the things that CamScanner can offer you, as per camscanner.com. (My additions are in BLUE.)

  • Access, edit and manage documents anytime and anywhere as you need.
  • CamScanner enables quick search in seconds.
  • Add notes to any documents
  • Add tag to any document for easy search
  • Multiple viewing modes: list view and thumbnail view
  • Copy and move documents to other locations
  • Easily search for any document by OCR tech- OCR stands for optical character recognition.
  • Merge documents content- you can send it as a pdf or jpeg file
  • Set passwords for important documents
  • Backup and restore documents to/from SD card
  • Easily share document scans in PDF or JPG to collaborators via email. Or you can save them in the cloud, fax and print out those documents. Your 5-page document is now 1 pdf!
  • Fax scans via network
  • Send PDF files via email
  • Print files wirelessly with Google Cloud Print
  • Upload files to cloud storages
  • Free upgrade to Full version for educational users! (download on camscanner.com site )

Google Keep: Can it Replace Evernote?

In an effort to compete with the popular Evernote, Google recently unveiled Google Keep, an Android app which allows you to bookmark sites, make notes, record memos, add graphics and color-code notes for sorting. The Android app syncs with your Google Drive account. The first thing I thought of when I read about this was, could this really be used instead of Evernote? After all, my iPhone has always had notes. I could make a list of things there. My calendar alerts me to events. Without an Apple app, Google Keep can be used only by Android users. Strike one. But rather than make the decision for you, I will present information about both Google Keep and Evernote, with a few reviews I found online. One thing I will say is that I LOVE Evernote, so if Google wants to compete, they will have to up their game. What do you think?

CamScanner Turns Your Smartphone into a Scanner and Fax Machine

It's the beginning of the school year, and if your school is like mine, you have already been inundated with loads of papers. (Somehow the notion of saving paper with online PDFs didn't happen here) With schedules, rules and regulations etc. everyone has a folder of new "stuff" which can easily be stored. I chose to scan the documents and sent them to the cloud for storage. What did I use? CamScanner.

CamScanner is an app for iPhone and Android phones, which  enables your phone to scan and fax documents. The free version has commercials and a limit to how many documents you can scan and the paid version eliminates commercials and allows unlimited scanning. If you are going to use the program a lot, I recommend the paid version, since it's only $4.99.

All About QR Codes in Your Classroom: Here Are 44 Sites to BYOD (Bring Your Own Device)

My school does not allow students to use cell phones in the classroom. I don't agree with this policy, but rules are rules. However, assigning homework outside the classroom will allow your kids to learn a new way to use their smartphones, since texting seems to be the only thing they love to do. In June 2011, I did a post explaining QR Codes. With this post, I have put together a large listing which includes lesson ideas, QR apps for smartphones and QR code generators. Best part of all? The resources are free. The ideas are free. And if your school allows cell phones in the classroom, you'll be able to liven up your lessons!  5 Unique Uses for QR Codes- from Mashable15 Creative QR Codes- graphic design teachers take note! 40 Interesting Ways to Use QR Codes in the Classroom

Viber Allows You to Call & Text For Free!

Viber is an application for iPhone® and Android™ phones that lets you make free phone calls and send text messages to anyone who also has the application installed. This app makes it very useful for communicating with other teaching colleagues from all over the world (Relatives, businesses, schools, whatever) I personally haven't tried it yet, but if you have used Viber, please give us your feedback.
